Sun Microsystems, based in Silicon Valley, has announced that it will expand its workforce in Bangalore, Beijing, Prague and St. Petersburg rather than increasing employment domestically. The move is being touted as an effort to increase its client and service capacity while minimizing cost increases. This will primarily be facilitated through the hiring of lower cost programmers in countries such as India. This move follows another recent outsourcing venture by Sun in which it transferred its internal IT team to Computer Sciences Corp. In all, the company has reduced its staff to approximately 30,000 from about 43,000 four years ago. COMPUTERWORLD Reports:
The ability to quickly hire a large number of programmers in India and other low-cost locations justified the company's plan to consolidate its worldwide research staff in those places, Sun said.
