In the face of stiff competition from more established animation centres in the Philippines, South Korea, China and Taiwan, the Indian animation industry is not only holding its own, its gaining market share. With animator's wages only a fraction of their western counterparts, a well-established film industry, and an abundance of high-quality software engineers, US studios are increasingly looking to India to produce new animation. Toonz Animation, a leading company in Kerala, offers animation at rates 25 per cent to 40 per cent lower than other Asian studios and much lower than those of American studios. In the US, animators can cost about $125 an hour. In India, they cost $25 an hour. Toonz has made several films and television series for Western companies.
