Powell Arrives for Discussion with Indian Leaders

Election year politics have made for some rather silly lawmaking- for instance, the new J.O.B.S. Act. So we send Powell around for damage control?

"US Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived [in India] Monday night on a 36-hour visit...

"They said the focus of the discussions between the two sides would be bilateral relations but regional and international issues of mutual interest could also be taken up.

"The differences over business process outsourcing (BPO) was not an issue in India-US relations, the officials said, making it clear that no quid pro quo -- India opening up investments in return for US companies outsourcing jobs as Powell had suggested last week -- would be acceptable to New Delhi."
